After two years of clinical studies, the Food and Drug Administration has approved CoolSculpting® by ZELTIQ™ as a non-invasive way to gently and effectively reduce fat. This approved technology is available in Wisconsin for people who want to treat troublesome areas of fat that won’t go away with diet and exercise.
What makes the CoolSculpting procedure different is that it uses advanced cooling technology to target fat cells through a gradual process that does not harm surrounding tissues. Starting several weeks after the procedure, cooled fat cells begin a process called “apoptosis” and begin to shrink and disappear. The body proceeds to naturally and gradually eliminate the cooled fat cells, reducing the thickness of the fat layer.
Unlike traditional liposuction, the CoolSculpting procedure is non-invasive with no needles or surgical incisions. During the procedure, an applicator is applied to the skin surface to deliver controlled cooling to target fat cells. The device then draws the bulge up between two cooling panels. The sensation is a firm tug and pull to ensure the selected tissue will be cooled most efficiently. The entire process takes one to two hours and the patient can return to normal activities after treatment.
On average, each CoolSculpting procedure results in a 22% reduction of fat in the treated area. As long as the patient maintains regular diet and exercise, the long-term results should remain stable. The ideal candidates for this treatment are healthy but have body fat distribution they’re not happy with. The procedure is effective, especially on resistant localized areas such as back fat, love handles and the isolated belly fat.
